Jeff Wall is a practising architect in Central London, where he has worked since qualifying in 1971 and is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. As a boy he was accepted into Newport College of Art in his native South Wales, but decided to train to be an architect rather than a painter. He studied at what is now Oxford Brookes University and has continued to draw and paint at any opportunity his chosen profession afforded him: a profession which also called extensively on his artistic background and ability to represent images quickly and graphically.

His work as an architect, while concentrated in and around London and the Home Counties, has extended to Europe and beyond, while artistically he has painted throughout Europe and briefly in Australia. He keeps extensive archive sketchbooks featuring numerous plein air drawings and pen and ink sketches. His art work includes buildings, churches, villages, landscapes and seascapes. He uses various medium – water colour, pen and pencil wash and mixed media combining some, or all, of these.
He is married with two married adult children.
